<image:title>Honourees - Paddy Wing - 2021</image:title>
<image:caption>Paddy Wing was born in Quesnel, BC in 1926. Wing’s family later moved to Vancouver in 1939. After following his love for dance and winning an amateur tap competition, Wing was a quick success and by 21 was living and working in New York City. He performed as a solo tap dancer & emcee for ‘China Doll’ nightclub. Wing’s show was a huge success, which earned him many rave reviews. His unique choreography which incorporated technical jazz elements with tap was met with standing ovations every night. He was often compared to comedic actor, Ray Bolger, but Wing coined his style, “ballet-tap,” and took it on the road as a solo act, performing in clubs across North America. Wing is widely known for breaking new ground for ethnic Chinese performers and rejecting stereotypes by opting to wear a classy top hat and tuxedo for his performances.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Honourees - Ted Cawker - 2016</image:title>
<image:caption>In 2016 West Coast Tap honoured tap dance teachers - those special people who share their talent and passion for tap dance with the next generation. We highlighted the contributions of three tap teachers who helped keep the art form alive during the ‘tap slump’ of the 60s & 70s and who lay the foundations for the amazing ‘tap dance hub’ that the lower mainland is today. Ted Cawker was born in Quebec in 1909 but his family later moved to Burnaby. He performed around town and in 1935 began teaching at June Roper’s ‘BC School of Dancing’. Ted toured North America and ended up in California staging dance sequences for many of 20th Century Fox’s musicals. He later opened the Cawker School of Dance in Bellingham and spent many years teaching on both sides of the boader. Jean Jepson was born in Vancouver in 1927. She started dancing as a young child and, at 17, she went to New York to join the Schubert Repertoire Company. Back in Vancouver she opened her own dance studio. Jean was a highly-regarded teacher, choreographer and examiner for the CDTA. Evelyn Ward was born and raised in Vancouver. At the age of 16, she rented a basement and offered tap lessons for 25 cents an hour, earning enough to pay her way through UBC to earn a Bachelor of Education. In the early 40s, she had a dance studio built on Hastings Street. At the Evelyn Ward Academy of Dance, she taught thousands of students including majorettes who led the PNE and Easter Day parades for 40 years, and the generations of performers at Theatre Under the Stars, in Stanley Park, and the Kitsilano Showboat. In 2003, the city of Vancouver named May 25th, Tap Day, as “Evelyne Ward Day.” The local tap dance community is grateful for the contributions of these, and all other, dedicated tap dance teachers.</image:caption>

When the family moved to New York Ruby began dance lessons. At the age of 13 she attended her first audition where her talent and spunky attitude got her into the chorus of her first show. She performed in a variety of shows before being spotted by Flo Ziegfeld and was given a starring role in one of his famous Broadway shows. In 1933 she was cast as Peggy Sawyer in the movie, ‘42nd Street’ and was given a full time contract with Warner Studios. Ruby continued to perform on Broadway, in films and on television through to her 70s. After suffering a brain aneurysm in 1974, she became the spokesperson for the American National Stroke Association. Ruby has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and was awarded an honourary doctorate by St. Bonventure University.</image:caption>

He widened his dance training to include studies in ballet performed with Katharine Dunham’s company when it toured to Vancouver in 1947. Gibson’s dancing impressed Dunham so much that he was offered a scholarship to her school in New York. Back in Vancouver in 1949, he began teaching with Mara McBirney and also founded the Negro Workshop Dance Group. He wrote and choreographed Bamboula – the first musical variety TV program produced in Vancouver - and later choreographed for the Eleanor Collins Show. Gibson continued to work and choreograph in Vancouver well into his golden years, and he is remembered as one of Canada’s most talented choreographers.</image:caption>
